Peter and Paul's fortress The Peter and Paul's fortress is the place where our city has started. The day of its foundation - May the 27th 1703 is considered to be the birthday of Saint-Pertersburg. A glamorous and exquisite structure on the Zajachij Island has a very long and mysterious history. It was built to be a fortress, but it was turned into a prison. More>>>
And now it is one of the most famous museums in our city attracting not only foreigners but also native citizens of Saint- Petersburg. The Peter and Paul's fortress is built in a form of a prolonged hexagon with six bastions connecting thick walls (the thickness is up to 20 meters). One of the bastions was named "Tsar bastion" - the fortress can boast being constructed under the observation of the tsar himself. The mystery starts right at the beginning of the foundation of these lands. Officially, the 21 year long Northern war with Sweden gave Russia all the rights for the access to the Baltic sea. But until now the historians can not tell exactly to whom originally belonged this territory of the coast of the gulf of Finland: to Russia or to Sweden, or, maybe, to Finland. A gracious spire topped by the figure of an angel bearing a cross belongs to Saint Peter and Paul's cathedral built by an Italian arquitect Domenico Trezzini. Legend: in 1830 there was a strong storm which made the spire decline. These were the times of Nicolas 1, there was no scaffolding used. They found a brave man, Peter Telushkin, who managed to climb up to the top of the spier. For his brave deed the tsar gave Telushkin 10.000 roubles (a huge sum of money) and a certificate which allowed him to drink vodka in any tavern free of charge. Telushkin spent the money for the ransom of his fiancee, but he lost the certificate. So in order Telushkin was not afraid to lose the certificate, Nicolas I ordered to stamp Telushkin's neck as a sign of the tsar's will. Saint Peter and Paul's cathedral used to be the tallest building in Russia for a long time (122,5 meters). One of the best interior decorations of the cathedral is the iconostasis donated by Catherine I (the wife of Peter the Great) to the cathedral. 40 masters on lime wood spent 5 years carving it. Peter the Great was the first of our tsars to accept the title of the emperor. Thus, the Russian tsars are buried in Moscow and all the Russian emperors are buried in the Peter and Paul's cathedral, except for Peter II and Ivan VI. In the cathedral there are 32 grave tombs of Romanov dynasty members (11 of them were the ruling ones) from Peter I, the Great, to Nicolas II, the martyr.
The excursion lasts for 3 hours.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral We welcome you to see one of the most important cathedrals of our city created by a great master Monferrand - Saint Isaac's Cathedral. It is the forth largest cupola cathedrals in the world. It took them a very long time of 40 years to construct it - from 1818 to 1858. This cathedral is the fourth successful attempt to construct the church of Saint Isaac in Saint-Petersburg. More>>>
The first church was created following the order of Peter the Great. It was right in the first church of St. Isaacs where Peter the Great and his wife, the future Catherine I, had their wedding ceremony. All the three churches built during the ruling of different tsars collapsed with time or were demolished, and only Alexander the I managed to create our present Saint Isaac's Cathedral. Isaac was a Byzantium monk canonized by the orthodox church. The feast day of Saint Isaac is the birthday of Peter the Great, that is why the Cathedral carries the name of this saint. The history of the nowadays Saint Isaac's Cathedral goes back to the beginning of the 19th century, when our tsar Alexander I appointed Monferrand, a young master, to be a court architect. There was a contest organized to choose the best project for reconstruction of a cathedral devoted to Saint-Isaac. They say that quite miraculously Alexander I saw the works of Monferrand (as he was not at all popular as a master) and was impressed by them. This young French master showed him about 24 miniature sketches of a cathedral in different styles to find out the taste of his serious client. The most interesting facts about the construction of the cathedral are: Because of the marshy soil it took them 5 years only to lay the foundation of the cathedral. Into the base of the column -which was put up first our tsar Nicolas I put a platinum coin to commemorate the process of construction. The weight of each column is 114 tons. It took the workers 45 minutes to put up each column, which is a little time taking into consideration the techniques of that period. Another engineering achievement is the design of the central dome. It consists of three cupolas put one over another a la "matrioshka ". The gaps between the top and the intermediate cupola are filled with 100,000 hollow clay pots which provides the cathedral with an excellent acoustic affect. This method was derived from the ancient Russia. Due to a special technique they have never regilded the dome of the cathedral -100 kilos of gold were being used for this purpose. A very sad fact is that 60 people perished during the process of gilding. In Saint-Isaac's cathedral which is one of the last monuments of classicism. You will be pleased to contemplate the wall paintings and mosaics, three iconostasis (each dedicated to a certain saint), the stained glass "Resurrection" (28 sq. meters in size), different kinds of marble the cathedral is made of, more than 400 sculptures and bas-reliefs by the best masters. And also a special exhibit devoted to the construction of Saint-Isaac's Cathedral. Our professional guides will have pleasure to acquaint you with the marvelous Cathedral of Saint Isaac and to tell you the detailed story about the history of its foundation. The excursion lasts for 3 hours.

The Church of Christ's Resurrection A marvelous structure near the Griboedov channel, that sparkles with bright and rich colors on its onion domes is the church of Christ's Resurrection. The chirch of Christ's Resurrection is also called The Church of our Savior on the Spilt Blood. It was built on the place where the tsar Alexander II was tragically wounded by a terrorist. More>>>
It was created by the order of Alexander III whose wish was to commemorate the tragic death of his father, Alexander III. The construction was committed in 1883 to a brilliant arquitect Parland and was successfully finished in 1907. The Church of our Savior on the Spilt Blood is quite a recent work that was created in a style of a Russian traditional arquitecture. It is a rare in Saint-Petersburg example of a pseudo-russian style. After the revolution the the Ñhurch of Christ's Resurrection was closed and used as a warehouse. As a result of this fact a lot of masterpieces stored in the church were ruined. There was a long period of restoration which ended in 1997. The church was turned into a public museum of the Russian mosaics. In general, it counts with about 7000meters of mosaics. As for the number of mosaics the church of Christ's Resurrection takes the second place in the world. Some sad facts from the history of the Church of our Savior on the Spilt Blood: At Soviet times they ironically called the cathedral "the Savior on the potatoes "for they used it to store potatoes there. During the blockade the cathedral was turned into a mortuary. During WWII a projectile has got stuck "in the arms of Christ" - which is the image painted on the cupola of the church of Christ's Resurrection. The excursion lasts for 3 hours.

Petergof (Petrodvoretz) Dear ladies and gentlemen! We invite you to see the residence of fountains and palaces - Petergof- with us! Petergof is one of the most exquisite and fascinating residences in the suburbs of Saint-Petersburg. The heart of Petergof is the Great Palace and the two parks adjoining it, adorned with golden sculptures and splendid fountains. More>>>
The residence is situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland and occupies a huge area - about 1000 hectares with more than 150 fountains and 10 palaces, if not to mention small pavilions. Created by the best architects commissioned from all over the world like Braunshtein, Valen de la Mot, Rastrelli, Petergof will take your breath away by its eternal beauty. Petergof was founded at the beginning of the 18th century as a monument to the Russia's victories in the Northern war (1700-1721) with Sweden. Thus, all the ornamentation of the residence is designed in a symbolic way to glorify the Russian naval might. It was our emperor Peter the Great - a unique man, who knew about 14 professions apart from the "profession" of an emperor - who was at the head of the construction projects in Peterhof. His wish was to compete in splendor and luxury with the residence in Versailles. It is no coincidence that Peter the Great chose this very place for creating his residence of Petergof and the fountain system. The secret is that he made use of the natural character of the territory: the water comes from many springs from the hills in 22 km from St-Petersburg. Thus, the fountain system in Petergof is operated not by machinery, but by gravity. When in summer all the fountains are in work they throw up about 31,000 liters of water per second (6,800 British gallons, or 8,200 Us gallons)!
The excursion lasts for 5 hours.

Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin) Created by Empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great, they call Pushkin "Tsarskoe Selo", which in translation means "the village of tsars". It is one of the earliest arquitectural ensembles in the suburbs of St-Petersburg. It lies 15 miles down south from St-Petersburg in a spectacular small city Pushkin, called so in honor of a great Russian poet and writer of the 191 century Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. More>>>
Tsarskoe Selo attracts the visitors by a fascinating Palace-and-Park ensemble - an impressing monument of the world's architectural and gardening arts. Its parks are distinguished by a subtle intimacy and especial lyricism. The Catherine park gave name to the Catherine palace, a compositional center of the Tsarskoselsky ensemble. Catherine Palace contains exquisite decorative objects , such as antique furniture , West-European and Russian paintings, an outstanding collection of porcelain, arms, bronze, sculptures. Though the most remarkable and unique in the Catherine palace, something that attracts people from different countries and is often called "the 8th wonder of the world", is the Amber room. The Amber room used to be the richest room in the palace. The story of the first amber room started in the early 18th century when Prussian King Friedrich I ordered an amber study for his Potsdam Palace. But quite soon the amber panels fell off the walls and the architect was exiled. The Study was taken apart and stored in boxes. During Peter the Great's visit to Prussia he was presented amber panels by Friedrich Wilhelm I, the son of Friedrich I. In exchange for such a valuable gift, our emperor in his turn presented to Prussia 248 soldiers as well as a lathe and a wine cup which he had made himself. The idea of making an amber study materialized only by the order of Elisabeth. And the amber room which we can see now is the replica of Rastrelli's work. He supplemented amber with mirror insertions, gild woodcarvings, mosaic panels of Ural jasper. After the Nazi occupation the amber panels were stolen and, unfortunately, never found afterwards. The amber room that is represented now is created with the amber from the quarry in the Kaliningrad region. Still it is an excellent copy: some experts say, it can even compete with the original. The palace was badly damaged during the World War II. Restoration works started in 1957 and are still in progress. The excursion to the Catherine palace starts from an exhibition room, where the visitors are shown the realized stages of the restorations. And after that in front of you opens a gallery of luxurious rooms of a unique palace. Our guides will help you to feel the ancient times of the far away epochs!

After Paul's death Pavlovsk belonged to his widow and remained a private royal property until the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Monastery) At present Alexander Nevsky Lavra is both an acting monastery and a museum in St-Petersburg. The monastery was founded in 1710 by Peter the Great's order on the place where according to the belief Alexander Nevsky and his troops defeated Swedes. Though they say that an official date of the monastery foundation is the 25th of March 1713 when the first wooden church " More>>>
Blagoveshenskaya" was sanctified. From the very beginning they established a hospital for officers and service class people. In 1720 they have founded a school for clergymen's children. With time this school turned into the seminary and afterwards into a Theological Academy. The construction in stone began under the project of Domenico Trezini. The first church of stone was built on the tomb of Peter the Great's beloved sister Natalia. Alexander Nevsky Lavra became one of the first most important architectural ensembles of the Northern capital - St-Petersburg. A lot of architects took part in the construction of this masterpiece, but the main idea of Trezini's project (that is not only a monastery, but also a residence, an institution and a palace) was conserved. Michael's castle We welcome you to see Michael's castle with us, the only castle in Saint-Petersburg! It was called so in honor of Saint Michael. Surrounded by canals and a secret underground passageway, it was built especially to protect tsar Paul I, who was afraid of being murdered in a plot. Paul I did not want to live in the Winter Palace, which was a favorite place of his mother Catherine the Great. More>>>
He ordered to build a castle on a small island in a style of a medieval construction with drawn bridges, secret rooms and stairs. But the fate of Paul I played a tragic joke on him. For 40 years he was a heir-in-law of Catherine the Great; for 4 years, 4 months and 4 days he was an emperor. He managed to live in Michael's castle only for 40 days. On the 111 of March of 1801 he was assassinated in a military plot in his own bedroom in Michael's castle. They say, that his son, future emperor Alexander I, was one of his murderers.
The excursion lasts for 3 hours.

Menshikov's Palace We are glad to give you brief information on Menshikov's Palace. Alexander Danilovich Menshikov was a campaignion of Peter The Great, and what is more - they were very good friends. Notwithstanding the poor background, Peter the Great appointed Menshikov governor general, gave him a title of a duke and presented him a large luxurious palace on Vasilievsky island. More>>>
In front of the palace a special moorage was built. Menshikov's palace was surrounded by a regular garden with sculptures and even grottoes with fountains. Being one of the richest houses in St-Petersburg and a governor's house, official receptions and state gala celebrations took place there. In 1725 Peter the Great died. During the rein of Catherine the I (the wife of Peter I) Menshikov successfully ruled Russia. His daughter was to marry the heir to the throne, but, according to the history, she never did. The new government did not approve of Menshikov's policy and at the end of his prosperous career he was exiled to Siberia. After the October revolution of 1917 the building was used by different educational establishments. From 1732-1918 it housed a famous Cadet school, which gave Russia such talented army commanders as Peter Rumiancev and Alexander Suvorov. In 1956 the restoration of Menshikov's palace was started and it acquired its original view. Notwithstanding all the changed which happened to the palace after the revolution, it preserved original fragments of the interiors of the XVIII century, among them the famous Dutch tiles and Walnut study. There you will see objects of everyday life that go back to the end of the 17th century and personal belongings of Peter I and his favourite - Prince Menshikov. The excursion lasts for 3 hours.
